The R&B singer is currently on his UR Experience Tour.
And he came onstage Sunday night in Tampa, Florida making a statement about recent events in the US which have led to demonstrations around the country.
The singer wore a T-shirt reading 'I can't breathe' as he performed, MTV News reports.
The quote refers to the last words of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man killed in July after a white police officer placed him in a chokehold.
A New York grand jury decided earlier this month the officer who executed the maneuver would not be indicted, inciting riots and raising further questions about race relations in policing in the US following other high-profile deaths of black men at the hands of white officers.
Usher made sure the world saw he had taken a stance as well, tweeting a photo of himself wearing the shirt with the quote that has become a battle cry for protesters.
'#ICantBreathe #URXTOUR #BiggerThan,' he tweeted following the show.
Other stars have lent their names to the cause as well, including NBA players Kobe Bryant and Derrick Rose, MTV reports.
Usher, 36, will pick up the tour again February 27 in Denmark after a brief hiatus following the Tampa show.
He's scheduled to play throughout Europe through early spring, wrapping in London March 26.
